How Do you Know which is the Right Pet for you?

So,
you’ve finally decided to get a pet! Now, if you are a little open-minded, set
aside your typical ‘cat and dog person’ mentalities and explore the world of
possible domestic animals that you can have. Of course, what is important to
remember is the cost factor and the amount of time that you can invest in you
pet.
They
usually say that the type of animal that you choose has some similarity to your
personality or the characteristics that you have; and while maybe this could be
true to an extent, its very important not to get swayed by beliefs. A person
having a dog could also keep a pet cat as well!
So,
what all are the factors that you really need to consider?
Some
of these would include the animal’s type of behaviour, feeding, care, costs,
housing expenses and most importantly the demands on your time. Other things to
consider are whether the animal would be able to fit inside your house and if
you would be able to live with the litter box, pet hair and the occasional
wear-and-tear that the animal creates.
If
you live with a family and there are small children, you have to make sure that
the pet does not adversely affects the child! You also have to ensure that
every single-family member is all right with the animal.
What is your lifestyle like? Are you a person
leading a sedentary or active life? (E.g. you will have to walk your dog and so
on with other animals.)
You
need to be able to have enough finances in meet the high veterinary bills
and/or medical checkups required for your pet. If you travel, there has to be someone
who can be a secondary caregiver for your pet.
·      Puppies or dogs: Known
to be extremely social animals, dogs top the list of preferred pets. There are
of course different sized ones; right from the small sized ones to the medium
sized ones that you can choose from; besides the breed. However, you have to be
able to spend some time every day with him or her. You can’t just leave a dog
alone, how you can with a cat. There are many costs associated such
food, leashes, toys, training, grooming,
spay/neuter surgery, a crate, routine vet care and, emergency vet care.
·      Kittens or Cats: Although its contrary to belief,
cats are extremely social animals nut also love to be aloof and on their own.
They are low on maintenance and some of the costs include toys, food, litter
and litter box, vet care and spay/neutering. If you are a person who likes
“your space” but at the same time love animals, a cat/kitten is perfect for
you!
·      Parrots, parakeets, cockatiels and cockatoo’s are
great pets, but usually bond with one member of the family and are extremely
noisy!
·      Tortoises, turtles, lizards and even snakes are
basically ‘observational’ pets and if you really want such a type its better to
opt for a native variety and not an exotic one.
So,
while there are many other animals that you can choose from it is very
important to consider your lifestyle, budget and the amount of time that you
can invest in the animal!
