Shit Just GoAT Real! Chopsticks Review

Synopsis: The film, a thriller and drama, has Mithila Palkar playing the lead role as Nirma Sahastrabuddhe who is a small town girl settling into a big city. She plays the role as a Mandarin translator and is a shy and numerology-fearing girl from Mumbai. 


Abhay Deol is seen playing the other lead lead role as ‘Artist’ who aspires to be a chef but is an enigmatic con man. He agrees to help her find her stolen car from a gangster for free Fayaz Bhai (played by Vijay Raaz); who also happens to be strangely attached to his pet – goat (baakra) named as Bahubaali! 


The turn of events that follow lead to a change in all of the characters lives! Netflix’s Indian original film production, there are high expectations that Chopsticks has to fill into!

Review: Looking back on his films, ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ that was released in 2005 (writing scripts), helming its sequel in 2012 as ‘Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum’ and then going on and making his directorial debut – ‘C Kkcompany’ which he co-wrote with with Chopsticks co-writer Rahul Awate this may be just one small step for Netflix but is one Giant Leap for film director and screenwriter, Sachin Yardi!

Chopsticks consistently swithes between drama and comedy and adds a background score to add to an emotional aspect to tell you how to feel towards a scene.  For example, Fayaz makes one of his debut defaulters sing his favourite songs, “Zindagi ek safar hai suhana” repeatedly in lieu of payment.) 

The fact that Bahubaali is gearing up for an animal fight and is put on a strict organic food diet itself is another funny element. 


              
Nirma (Mithila) is a superstitious girl (employee at Taj Lands End) who can be said is a bit clumsy, unpolished and a nervous wreck. However, she is a pushover, has little self esteem and is constantly bullied by her colleagues at office. Her mom constantly insists that she listens to self-help, motivational tapes to help her on her lacking neglected self esteem. Her dominant line is “I’ll kill them with success and bury them with a smile.”

One of her main achievements is when she purchases her first new car – a red i10 on her own. 



However, immediately after purchasing her car, she just receives her brand new i10 in the showroom there are simultaneous feelings of superstition murking behind her spirit as she quickly adds up the numbers of her numberplate and shiver in fear as they add up to 11 – when the Twin Towers fell (September 11th) and how there were 258 passengers on board.

She then visits Mahalaxmi temple to receive blessings and gets tricked into handing over her car keys to someone who tells her that he will park her car (and she believes it!) for a pay and park! Her happiness is quick to disappear when she realises that the apparent ‘ticket’ for her parking was just a receipt for a public urinal! This leaves her feeling crushed, angry, hurt and confused! 

She approaches the police to lodge a complaint but they only land up being more of a nuisance than any sort of relief for her. This is when she happens to encounter a thief who gives her Artist’s contact (aka Shashwat Menon, played by Abhay Deol) who could help her to find her car. He seems to have connections among the taporis and helps her to find her car. 



Being a digital format, it is quite different from a Bollywood film. When asked what motivated him to choose the digital platform, Abhay Deol told Grazia that it was the script ‘content’ that appealed to him and Sachin was adept at well known for upholding sorrow which is a fundamental brick while performing comedy. 

Both Nirma and Artist are idiosyncratic,  while Nirma nervously fiddles with her fingers Artist can be seen as a cold, isolated charmer who is dishonest.  

Vijay Raaz’s versality can be in quite a humerous role as the ‘saving grace’, through his mumbling and sulking moments. Even when Animal Planet visits them to film his goat, and he explains the meaning of Bahubaali to the foreign couple,  “Baahu means arm and bali means strong.” 



“Oh, like Neil Armstrong,” says the man. Raaz even responds to their statement saying with a flabbergasted expression, after which his friends note, “Bhai, shayad Neil Nitin Mukesh (Indian actor) ki baat kar rahe hai.” (Brother they must be talking about Neil Nitin Mukesh).  

In a time an age when most films are serios, biopics, dark or are over dramatic I felt it was a nice and light movie that leaves you feeling lighthearted and happy. It is soulful, warm and funny. There are basic elements of human values when Bahubaali is returned to Vijay (after he learns his lesson) by Nirma, the chemistry between Artist and Nirma, the action as an innocent and naïve girl by Nirma.

You can go on and on, critiquing a film – judging it for what it lacks or what it should have been more of. However, this film was a gripping and light watch and will find its appeal to a larger audience, being in digital format.

Following a narrative structure, majority of the screen presence is taken by Mithila Palkar. I think its simple and got an easy to understand approach.   

The use of photography and camerawork in the film making, the lighting, camera filters and choice of lenses while shooting through out the film is extrmely appealing. It’s a  brilliant combination of sound and tunes which set in the entire entire background well.

The art direction by Ajit Patnaik and production design by Shashank Tere is enriching. The music score by Pradeep Mukhopadhyay is extrmely worth noting and just one song by mukesh Parmar is melodious can fit the bill for the movie!The film which is edited by Unnikrishnan P P is effective at evoking all the necessary emotions. You may desire more out of this film, but something in it just leaves me happy, desiring nothing more. We all are just a hungry film critiquing society. We need to sometimes stop and enjoy the film!
