Happiness…
Do you ever
stop and really think about the meaning of this word and its impact on your
life? If you are like most people, you probably have tied your happiness on
some sort of goal that you are working towards achieving; for example attaining
success or a promotion at a job, finding a meaningful relationship partner or
even prosperity.
Happiness is
the light at the end of the tunnel for you; the tunnel being the journey of
your goal. The pursuit of happiness is what really makes achieving our life
goals interesting. It’s could be as simple as when your life fulfills your
needs. It comes from feeling fulfilled and satisfied. 



There are
many methods of measuring happiness. Some of the different scales include:
·      
The Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS)
is a four-item scale, measuring global subjective happiness. 
·      
The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule 
(PANAS) is used to detect the relation between
personality traits and positive or negative affects at this moment,
·         The Satisfaction with Life Scale
(SWLS) is a global cognitive assessment of life satisfaction developed by Ed Diener. 








Interestingly, in most European languages the
term ‘happiness’ is synonymous with luck. 



It is also the main purpose of mostly
every single eastern religion –Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Judaism,
Roman Catholicism and Islam. Happiness has played a very important role in
many theories such as in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, self-determination theory
and in positive psychology.


Happiness is a sense of contentment that life is just as it should be. It is a mental or emotional state of well-being, which are accompanies by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from intense to to contentment. However, true happiness is an inner quality, a state of mind where your mind is at peace. It is at this time that you feel happy and all the worldly pleasures, power and possessions are of insignificance to you.


However,
happiness is a something we ALL have to work hard towards achieving.  This is why goal-setting is the best way to
predict the cycle between our happiness and satisfaction we get in life. Its
very important to know how to properly set goals for yourself.
How should
you set goals for yourself?
  • Decide: First think about
    something that you want to do or work towards.
  • Write it down
  • Execute the goals- day by day

.
What is goal-setting?: Goal setting is the process of
identifying the things that you want to accomplish by establishing certain
measurable timeframes and targets.



Goals do not
have to be so big that achieving them may be next to impossible, such as winning
a gold medal at the Olympics, closing a huge business deal, etc. Goal setting
in not about achieving these ‘pinnacle moments.’ It is the small and decisive
steps that move you in a positive direction, taking you one step at a time
closer to your goal. 


It is extremely
important to work towards professional and personal goals for our overall
wellbeing, as it also enables us to become a valuable contributor to our
society. Our lives then feel far more focused, meaningful and with a purpose
and direction.  It boosts our self-esteem
as well and helps us grow and improve as an individual.


Requirements:
For such personal growth to occur, there are two very important             elements required: deliberate
practice and continuous effort. The problem we face is, that as adults we tend
to give up after one or two tries. We have to believe though that the challenge
is just temporary and a problem you just have not solved yet. Its important to
have the commitment and just “hang in there”!



Break Down the Big Goals:
It’s rarely
easy to achieve a big goal, which can even exasperate our spirit. What we have
to do is break the big task into a series of small and achievable/manageable
tasks. It’s important to set out a plan or framework to follow, so that you can
trace your progress along the way.

At every
target that you reach it is important to credit yourself; ‘give yourself a pat
on the back’ –enjoy the fruits of your labour. Use this motivation as a
stepping-stone to motivate you to take the next step forward. It is an simple,
repeatable technique that enables ongoing sustainable success.
The tasks DO
NOT have to be LARGE. It can just be talking a walk every day or going to the
gym every day, for your health. You have to remember that you are THE ONLY one
who has the power to change things and the capability to achieve it. You have
to have the courage to move forward, continuously one step at a time.



By breaking
down the attributes towards achieving your goal you are more inclined towards
succeeding at attaining your goals.
   
Problems
that pop up along the way: So, we have our goals written down and we know that
we just HAVE to work on them, right? However, along comes Mr. Procrastinator
who will not only try to distract you from your work but also undermine your
performance! So, we have to fight back harder and stronger. We have to make
REAL PROGRESS on achieving our goals, because that’s what’s going to lead to
many more positive emotions and our subjective well being (SWB) increases.
Research has
found that the strongest positive emotional reaction is when we make progress
on the most difficult tasks. It is only when you “own” the task and make it
your own that it can be meaningful for you. Making the task your own simply
means that you have to identify with the task on some level        
Positive
Psychology: 2017, an extremely modern and fast paced time, isn’t it? Yet, the
formula of happiness has yet not been found. Positive psychology, which is
simply the study of happiness, examines how ordinary people can become ‘happier
and more fulfilled’.  In simple words it
is the scientific study of what actually makes life most worth living.



 It could also mean the scientific study of
positive human functioning and flourishing on different levels, which include
personal, biological, cultural, relational, and global dimensions. It began in
1998. There are many ways by which individual happiness can be fostered and
increased through financial income, but happiness is known to plateau or even,
fall when no gains are made.                      
What is
really interesting about positive psychology is that is not an escape from
reality. There is no denial to inevitable hardships of life or even look at
them through rose-tinted glasses. Instead, its premise is that the
understanding of what goes wrong in life also needs to be complemented by what
goes well. In fact, practitioners believe that studying human suffering and
dysfunction is as important as studying the ways in which people feel joy,
practice altruism and even create happy families.           


          
In fact the
entire secret to happiness has become grown in leaps and bounds. Happiness
books have even become a cottage industry for people who are constantly trying
to become happier, focus on self-growth or even want to just find the right way
to live their lives in the best possible manner. There is so much out there to
read. Nonetheless, happiness is much more than a state of mind and cognitive
reflections.
Connecting
the Dots- Personal Growth (Life Goals), Goal Setting & Positive Psychology
Goal setting
can be a very constructive process in your life, which can make you a far more
positive and happy person. It takes a lot of practice and work to stay happy
and goal setting is just one part of the equation. The types of goals you set
should be associated with your happiness.

They can be
short-term or long-term goals, but you have to take the effort and make small,
actionable steps towards the goal.
