How would you react if you found out that your mother was having an affair with your self-absorbed and heedless boss? Zara (Joey King), a young 24-year-old finds herself in a dilemma as she is underappreciated by her boss – who happens to also be a famous Hollywood star, Chris Cole (Zac Effron); but also finds out that her mother is having a secret affair with him.
Although Chris had initially visited her house to offer her a position as an assistant producer, shortly after Zara quit her job; there was an instant mutual attraction between Zara’s widowed mother – Brooke (Nicole Kidman) and Chris who hit it off immediately while waiting for Zara to come home. Is it possible to accept your boss as your mother’s new romantic interest and welcome him into your family life?
The movie is directed by Richard LaGravenese, who is well known for having directed films such as P.S. I Love You, Water for Elephants and Paris Je T’aime, and is written by screenwriter, Carrie Solomon who is known for her works such as My Boyfriend’s Wedding.
Starring Nicole Kidman, Joey Lynn King and Zachary David Alexander Efron in the lead, you are taken on a rollercoaster of emotions such as love, betrayal, compassion and more in this marvel of a movie. Although the story is appealing at first, it is yet predictable and full of cliches. One can credit the comical acting skills but it fails to have a true essence of what a true Hollywood successful film has. Although there are many heart-warming moments such as Brook’s dedication as a mother to Zara and Zara’s compassionate understanding towards her mother dating a new man in her life, there is nothing new that this film has to offer to the audience.
A typical scene when Chris joins them for Christmas at Zara’s grandmother’s house makes you wonder how people are so quick in moving into relationships. Although it is not a great movie that will leave a lasting impression on your mind, it is worth a one-time watch!
