A marriage requires a lot of acceptance between the couple to create a sense of friendship, affection, intimacy and support. This also means accepting all the bad qualities of the other partner and one of these may include snoring.
After his debut film Sethum Aayiram Pon (2020), Tamil filmmaker and director Anand Ravichandran had a theatrical release of his movie DeAr, in April 2024 starring GV Prakash Kumar and Aishwarya Rajesh. DeAr is an acronym for Deepika and Arjun, the names of the characters played by the leads. While Arjun is a light-sleeper who needs his eight hours of sleep to better function as a television journalist; Deepika is a “sound-sleeper” whose sleep apnea has been scaring away potential matrimony matches.
The film was released on Netflix on 28th April, 2024. The film was produced by Varun Tripuraneni and Abhishek Ramisetty under the banner Nutmeg Productions, Romeo Pictures.
Revolving around a newly married couple Arjun and Deepika, Arjun is surprised as his newlywed wife can be heard snoring (due to her sleep apnea) very loudly each night as they sleep. Besides this, the film explores all the adjustments needed for a lasting marriage and the impact such a seemingly trivial issue can have on a couple’s life. While the storyline may catch the audience’s attention, the acting can be seen as very rushed and not up to the mark.
The movie traces how the couple and the rest of the family grapple with the falling out of this marriage. This movie can be compared to last year’s hit Tamil romantic drama, Good Night, depicting the story of an IT man who faces a snoring problem while living with his new wife, Anu. Arjun even goes to the extent of wanting a divorce from his wife for her snoring problem. However, can a middle ground be found between them? While the movie is nothing extraordinary, it can be viewed as a one-time watch.
